Why 317L alloy steel species are more popular than 316, 316L?

Alloy 316, 316L, and 317L are Austenite stainless steel based on molybdenum. Compared with conventional chromium-nickel Austeen, such as 304 alloy, it has better anti-general corrosion and point corrosion and crack corrosion. These alloys have higher ductility, anti -stress corrosion performance, pressure resistance and high temperature resistance. In the application of better anti-general corrosion and point corrosion performance, 317L is more popular than 316 or 316L, because 317L molybdenum content is 3-4 %, and the molybdenum content of 316 and 316L is only 2-3 %. In addition to prominent corrosion resistance and strength, 316 alloys and 316L and 317L copper-nickel-molybdenum alloy also have the typical characteristics of Austeena stainless steel, that is, good processing and formability.

Compared with 18-8 stainless steel, 316, 316L, and 317L are generally corrosive.

There is better corrosion resistance.

Generally speaking, the medium of 18-8 stainless steel does not corrode the molybdenum brand. The only exception is that high oxidation acids, such as nitric acid, and molybdenum stainless steel containing this acid is weak. In sulfate solutions, 316 and 317L have better corrosion resistance than other chromium-nickel types.

Under the condition of up to 120 ° F (38 ° C), these two brands have good corrosion resistance to high concentration solutions. Of course, testing during use is essential, because operating conditions and acidic pollutants may seriously affect the rate of corrosion. When concentrated sulfur -containing gas, these two brands have better corrosion resistance than other types of stainless steel. However, in this application, the effect of acid concentration on the corrosion rate is quite large, and this factor should be carefully considered.

Molybdenum stainless steel 316 and 317L have certain corrosion resistance to other various environments.

Corrosion data shows that these alloys show superior corrosion resistance in the 20%phosphoric acid solution of boiling. They are also widely used in the treatment of heat -organic acid and fatty acids. Food, manufacturing and treatment of pharmaceutical products usually use molybdenum stainless steel, because metal pollution should be reduced as much as possible.

Generally speaking, under the same environmental conditions, 316, 316L can be regarded as the same as that of 317L. However, there are exceptions to cause welding and thermal influence zone corrosion. In this medium, 316L and 317L are often selected, because the carbon content is low, which can improve the corrosion resistance of crystal resistance.
